It may not matter if one's sole interest is in Miller's work as literature or theater, but what happens when people only know history through creative works of art and not from primary sources and historical facts, letting someone else pick and choose between facts to include and which to alter for their own artistic purposes and political arguments?

This can pose a problem, as people usually believe whatever they read. One should know that what they are reading is a piece of historical fiction and NOT non-fiction. If they know this, then they also know that anything written in the book that matches up with history is coincedental or put there. It is not known for sure what is fact or fiction when reading a book like the Crucible. Further research would need to be done in order to conclude the facts.

The problem with "The Crucible" not being completed accurate is that people think it is. Like, with Abigail and John Proctor having an affair, when realistically John Proctor was like 60 and Abigail was 12. People will end up mixing fact with fiction.

i believe that if you only read the crucible and really didn't go over what actually happen then history repeats itself and you accept the opinion of the writer.

The first three people who commented all have great thoughts. Yet, I still believe you can get a pretty good idea of what happened historically from reading these type of stories. It may not match up accurately to the "tee" of real life, and I realize that. But, at least it is in close proximity to what actually was. Even saying this, we nevertheless have to be careful regarding the motivation of the author of the stories we read. They could be trying to exagerrate, or they may really be trying to fit historical reality into the creativity, which is great.

People need to know the distinction between historical fiction and historical fact. While the story is set in a historical setting people need to find using real sources what really happened during the events of the Crucible.

I think that you should read the crucible because it could tell you some important details that happen through history. People should also know the real facts of historical fiction and fact.

Having a drama based on what really happened in history is a good way to get people really into history, because after they read it, they may have an opportunity to look up facts about it and learn more.

You can't base all of your knowledge off of works like the Crucible. You have to know actual events from history and the accurate account of them. Stories like the Crucible are not fact, but they are enhanced for the reader. And on the other hand, you really can glean things from the story. Though the facts in this story are not perfectly historically correct, it gives you a good base to work off of.

I think in a story like 'The Crucible' it is to grab the readers attention not to state actual historical facts. By making a story based of historical facts can lead someone to wanting to actually read more about the actual historical event.

if you only read the crucible and didn't read the history of it you'll possibly believe what the writer said. often, plays are based on a point of view, so without reading what really happen you'll be confused. we should be reading the original history than see if the writer point of view is same as the play written. it will be much easy to believe in something original than the new version. and this all requires research.

When people only know history through creative works of art, they can easily be misguided. The authors of these choose what details they want in their work & what ones they don't while adding non historical details to make it more interesting for their readers. To prevent one from confusing fact with fiction, a person should think to also read primary sources that deal with the historical event.
